Hot Off the Grill by Carla Stehr

Hot Off the Grill by Carla Stehr

Artist Statement: I love the subtle colors and sculpturing of oyster shells. After making a wall-hung oyster (Pacific Oyster) I wondered if I could make oyster shells two-sided and curved. Several experiments later, I found that wireform mesh sandwiched between felt and painted cotton fabric worked. I found a grill basket at Goodwill which inspired me to include the edible part of the oyster and show them hot off the grill.

Materials & Techniques: Shells: Exterior - wireform mesh, ecofelt, and cotton fabric, diluted paint applied after stitching. Interior- cotton fabric was painted separately, then stitched to the back of the shell. The shell hinge is Velcro. Barnacles: Krafttex glued, painted, and hand stitched to the shell. Oyster: Painted cotton fabric stuffed with polyfill.

Dimensions: 16 x 16 x 5
