In Nature by Geraldine Warner

In Nature by Geraldine Warner

Artist Statement: I created this quilt spontaneously, with no plan before I began—nothing but a feeling of joy at the impending arrival of spring. In most aspects of my life, I like to make detailed plans. I felt a tremendous sense of adventure and freedom as I cut and sewed the pieces of this quilt and saw it gradually take shape. In my recent quilts, I have been responding to the process rather than dictating it. The older quilt, “Shooting Star,” was carefully designed before I began to sew. Although the segments of the twisted log cabin were foundation pieced free-form, each segment needed to have a precise 18-degree angle for them to fit together. Creating the five-pointed star in the middle of the smallest pentagon was another geometric challenge.

Materials & Techniques: This quilt was machine pieced from new and recycled silk fabrics, which were interfaced with cotton. I quilted it with silk threads using my domestic sewing machine.
