Artist Statement: I was inspired by the Art Nouveau style roses, but I wanted to use them in a more contemporary way. As my design ideas progressed, they became bolder and more colorful.

The dramatic impact comes from strong color work combined with the use of stylized images. The addition of playful details, such as the 3-D folded thorns and the big stitch quilting, draws the viewer into the quilt.

Materials & Techniques: I use mostly hand-dyed fabrics, my own and those of Judy Robertson. The piece is hand stitched/quilted with many leaves in the blue section and with running stitches elsewhere. Stitching extends from the lattice section into the background. The stems, leaves and roses are machine and hand appliquéd. The green strip extends beyond the border for added interest.

Dimensions: 55"W x 78"H

Honors:
Judged "Best Innovative Quilt" at Pacific Northwest Quiltfest 2004

Artist Bio: I attended Oregon's Linfield College, then transferred to the University of Washington. I worked as a health sciences illustrator at the UW Health Sciences Research Center for 31 years.

Art has played a major role in my life from the beginning, having been a painter, porcelain doll artist, basket weaver and potter before I discovered art quilts. In 1999 I boldly signed up for a 4 year course in Patchwork and Quilting offered by City & Guilds of London, which I completed in 2003.
