Sun Lanterns by Carolyn Maia Burton

Sun Lanterns by Carolyn Maia Burton

Artist Statement: I wanted a feeling of distant planets; however, several people could see lanterns, hence, 'Sun Lanterns.' Interestingly, pictures of the surface of the sun were published the day after I had done uncannily similar quilting on my 'suns'. 'Crazy Sashiko' (2014), was my first art quilt. Overall, my work has become larger and simpler, but I still love to embellish with sashiko.

Materials & Techniques: Machine pieced and quilted. Hand-stitched sashiko. Hand dyed cotton, Yukata cotton, Kona cotton and Japanese sashiko thread.

Dimensions: 47 x 33 x 0

Photographer: Fred Higgins
