Fish Skin 1 by Carla Stehr

Artist Statement:  Fish skin is beautiful when seen up close with a scanning electron microscope. The surface of each skin cell is covered with tiny ridges.  Mucus cells (the cells that make fish slimy) are occasionally scattered between skin cells. Five skin cells and one mucus cell are represented with stitching and paint.

Materials & Techniques:  Cotton fabric was free motion quilted, diluted paint was applied, then additional quilting was added.  An opening was made through the entire quilt and replaced with painted Lutradur backed with cotton fabric.

Dimensions: 19 x 34
