Diatom 6 by Carla Stehr

Diatom 6 by Carla Stehr

Artist Statement:  Diatoms are single-celled, aquatic plants that can only been seen with a microscope.  Each species has beautiful multi-layered cell walls with unique surface patterns. This piece is inspired by an image I photographed with a scanning electron microscope during my career as a Fisheries Biologist.

Materials & Techniques:  The top layer is Lutradur patterned with a heat tool, then painted.  This was stitched on top of two more layers of painted cotton fabric with holes cut through to show the layers underneath.

Dimensions:  32 x 22

Photographer: Carla Stehr
