Mary Berdan - They Were Roses

Mary Berdan - They Were Roses

Artist Statement: My favorite medium for fiber art is silk. In this series, I am exploring how one's eyes see blurred lines peripherally when one is in motion and how this changes what was originally in focus.

Materials & Techniques: Made of silk (prints and solids), the top and bottom portions of this piece include a dark navy blue with fine red thread stripes from a piece of antique kimono lining creating an additional illusion of blurred lines. Machine and hand stitched with silk tubes stuffed with cotton and attached to a base fabric subsequently mounted to stretched canvas creating its multiple layers and dimension, while protecting silk from direct exposure to wood stretcher bars.

Dimensions: 44"W x 30"H x 1"D
