Artist Statement: This quilt is part of my collaboration with poet Margaret Chula on the Japanese American internment. What would you carry if you had to leave your home? One answer to this question is found in an old photo of a very young boy and his mother leaving Bainbridge Island when the internment of Japanese Americans began in the 1940's. The mother was holding the hand of her son and under her arm she was holding her son's stuffed bunny. She did not bring a fancy dress or her china, but something to comfort her son for the trials she knew must be ahead. In the boy's dream the bunnies represent what the young boy had to comfort him and the waves represent the water around Bainbridge Island, the home that he wants to return to. One side of the art quilt represents more traditional Japanese style whereas the other side is a more abstract image. For the abstract side the young boy is looking out the window at night.

Dimensions: 20" wide X 49" high(each face)
