Melanin by Marissa Vignali

Artist Statement: As humans migrated out of Africa into areas with less sunlight, melanin was lost by natural selection to allow vitamin D synthesis. This piece represents the range of skin tones found around the globe, jumbled together as a result of more recent population movements, including the transatlantic slave trade, migration due to economic opportunities and the search for better living conditions, and displacements caused by war, political unrest, prosecution and climate change.

Materials & Techniques: Commercial batiks and hand dyed cotton, cotton and machine embroidery thread.
