Odyssey by Janet Darcher

Odyssey by Janet Darcher

Artist Statement: I appreciate how artistic ideas and techniques can travel, adapt, and evolve as they move from one culture to another and across different periods of history. Exploring the boundaries of art, challenging traditional definitions of form and function, and using art to address social and political is what we as fiber artists do. I was feeling a bit stuck last year, so on my 70th birthday, I participated in my first ceramics class, my first time working with clay and glazes. It wasn’t life changing but it was the kick in the pants I needed to energize my practice.

Materials & Techniques: Ceramic tiles. Rust and indigo-dyed fabric. Thickened dye. Rust-dyed cotton thread and commercial embroidery floss. Blue dye was scraped on a piece of failed rust-dyed cotton. Patches were cut from a variety of surface-designed fabrics. Both machine and hand stitching were used to give the feeling of movement.

Dimensions: 28 x 19 x 0
