image of quilt titled "Infinity" by Karen Soma © 2003

Artist Statement: Infinity is the result of a collaboration between visual artist Karen N. Soma and poet Ann Spiers. Each had recently lost a parent, so they decided to explore their grief using images from nature that spoke to them of this life passage. Layered silkscreen prints of ferns, text and striped geometric motif join with a modified haiku form to suggest mystery, mourning and death's place in the natural cycle. The entire poem is contained on the quilt (each quadrant holds six lines), its words embedded in a matrix of color and pattern, so that viewers drawn to the text would also notice the visual nuances, and vice versa. However, some lines are obscured - and like our knowledge of the mystery of death - not easily revealed.

Dimensions: 41" wide x 41" high

Materials and Techniques: I silk screen my own fabric. Machine pieced and quilted. Embellished with beads.
