Image of quilt titled "A Fishing Village Shining Under a Colorful Sunset" by Dianne Smith

Artist Statement: I watched the sun set over a remote fishing village in the tidal marshes of southwestern Mexico. Facing west, looking at the glowing village and the sky from our boat in the lagoon, the glowing village faded into the horizon. It then stood starkly against the glorious sky. I have tried to recreate the colors of that sunset over the village combined with the visual texture of chrysanthemum in the colors and visual texture of this piece. To increase the visual texture I used piecing techniques originally learned in a Nancy Crow workshop with fusing methods I learned from Sue Benner.

Chinese Chrysanthemum Series: Yu Cheng Xie Zhao

Materials & Techniques: Hand-dyed silk, hand-painted cotton, commercial cotton. Strip piecing, reverse seams with contrasting thread, fusing.
