Image of quilt titled "Radiance" by Cathy Erickson

Artist Statement: This quilt was named for the rays of yellow sunshine which appear to shine through the quilt. East meets West in this quilt with its combination of Japanese fabrics and American hand-dyed and commercial fabrics. The flowers in the baskets on the yukata fabric are typical flowers for the autumn season including chrysanthemums. I have used japanese family crest symbols for chrysanthemums in my machine quilting. The silk ribbon California poppies bloom by my house profusely in the Northwest in the fall. The interlocking triangles represent how life in the Northwest is a blending and mixing of both eastern and western cultures until one is sometimes not sure where one ends and the other begins. The only separation in the two cultures is the waves of the Pacific Ocean.

Chinese Chrysanthemum Series: Guang Hui

Materials & Techniques: Japanese fabrics, batiks, hand-dyed fabrics, silk ribbon. Piecing, silk ribbon embellishment, machine quilting.
