Artist Statement: The opportunities that language presents are not always clear to me. The fabrics, with its patterns and words (which the poet and I created), offer a way of presenting fragments of a larger conversation that we are part of but don’t always hear. The jumping from one thought to another, from one language to another, offers a staccato sequence, a visual code that is not easily broken. Portions of thoughts are presented incomplete, though with a certain symmetry. Does this serve the language, to put it into such segmentation? How much is one required to reveal? The use of black plastic webbing offers a porous field, full of holes, full of ways that we can and will misinterpret one another. Still, where our words appear, they call to us in the same way that a flag asks for our allegiance.

Dimensions: 49" wide x 35" high

Materials and Techniques: Hand dyed and commercial fabrics which were then discharged, printed and/or hand written with phrases, words, poems that had meaning to the collaborators, plastic window screening. Machine pieced, hand and machine quilted.
