image of quilt titled "Evolution: Glyptodont" by Giselle Blythe

Artist Statement: I am fascinated by the historical evolution of artistic patterning and design. Many patterns are derived from nature. This one is based on an image of a fossil fragment of a glyptodont, a prehistoric armadillo-like animal the size of a Volkswagen. I morphed a tracing of the photograph of the fossil into a Penrose-type tile pattern suitable for pieced quilting. Bead embellishment honors the earth strata where the fossil was found in Mexico.

Dimensions: 27" wide x 30" high
