Valeria Raybolt, Brazil - Pedras Parideiras

Valeria Raybolt, Brazil - Pedras Parideiras

Artist Statement: In Castanheira Village, in the Arouca Geopark - the "parideiras (breeding) stones", which reveal a unique geological phenomenon in the world, are black nodules of biotite, a mineral, embedded in a granite matrix that, due to erosion, leaps out of the rock. And in addition to being a unique scientific phenomenon, both in its formation and in the "expulsion" due to erosion, the "parideiras stones" are associated with ancestral mysticism, linked to the fecundity, still alive in the local populations.

Materials & Techniques: Cotton fabrics, silk, wool, muslin, wool and various threads. Applique and machine quilted.

Dimensions: 23.5" x 27.5"
