Tree Shadow

There upon the highest branch
            hangs the darkest
            canopy of leaves
the solid unnumbered leaves
            that block sunlight
            and shelter the ground
against the harsh rays above.
Under those dark leaves
            the ferns wave their fans
            as if to invite visitors
to rest in soft, green comfort,
in coolness and silent acceptance.
