image of quilt titled "Jazz Birds" by Linda Rudin Frizzell © 2001

Artist Statement: This project was an opportunity to combine my birdwatching with my fiber art. In preparation for the work, I did dozens of field sketches of wading birds. Once I felt comfortable with the anatomy of the animal and the forms I wanted to use, I then did free-hand collages with fabric. I worked quickly and created many images, four of which I used in this piece. The materials include cottons, silks, brocades, metallics, and hand-painted fabric.

Materials & Techniques: Commercial brocades, silks, metallics, satins, velvets, cottons, synthetics and plastics. Hand printed and dyed cottons. Freeform collage and assemblage with machine embroidery and construction.

Dimensions: 20" wide x 24" high
